Day 1: On March.12,09 was my first day at Collingwood Community Policing Center. The first thing I did was, I got my contract signed and got the safety orientation sheet done. After that our supervisor told me, jimmy and a another co-op student about all of the vancouver elementry schools participating in the anual garbage pickup. So he gave us a sheet that told us how many garbage bags and the size of gloves each school needed. When we finished organizing the bags and the gloves we went on our first break. After the break the lady police officer gave us a tour of her police car which was pretty neat. She showed us how to look up someone with their licence plate and she let us use it. I punched in my cars licence plate number and I found out my record was clean. After that our supervisor told us a little about the workplace and how its a non- profitable because their giving to the community. He told us that they do fund raisers and one of the ways they get money was that people dropped us cans and bottles. So we had to seperate the cans from the bottles and take out any dairy products. It was a dirty and smelly experience. Today we got to go home a hour early because we finished everything we had.
Day 2: Today at CPC me and jimmy were told to do audits by our supervisor. Audits are you go walk around the neighbourhood to check if all the cars are safe from grand theft auto. If not we leave a note saying what is need to be done to prevent grand theft auto. This took us about a hour and a half. When we got back we were suppose to go to a elementary school to play hockey with the kids, but there were not enough spots in the car to fit everyone. So me and jimmy gave ours spots away, thinking we would just sit here and relax with no one around. But are supervisor gave us a job which was to make a poster for the bike rodeo at the kingsway mall. When everyone returned we were told by our supervisor to take the palm pilots ( which tell you if a car is stolen) to check if there were any abandoned cars. After this our day was finally over.
Day 3: Today at CPC we met Mr.Tong in the morning. After that me and jimmy went speed watching to check if everyone was obeying the speed limits and it turned out they were not. People were going 70km/h on a street with the speed limit of 50km/h. This took about 2 hours to complete. When we got back we did a little bit of auditing and some small errands for the supervisor. Today was an easy day with not much to do, so we got sent home early.
Day 4: Today at CPC was my last day of work experience. When I walked in I met new volunteers from SFU and all of us went around the area to hand out flyers for the presentation on safety and crime on the weekend. One of the volunteers was having a bet with my supervisor that 100 guests will not the presentation. After we finished handing out flyers me and jimmy went out to do audits which took about 2 hours. After that we painted a poster and my day came to a end. Working at CPC made me realize, becoming a cop is not a bad career. You make $75,000 a year but if you have a degree or anything else you get paid higher. I would recommend this work place to people who want to become a police officer because the more volunteer work you have that is related to policing, looks good on your resume.
